Frequently Asked Questions

  • When should children get a check-up with an orthodontist?
The Canadian and American Association of Orthodontists recommend that the initial orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems or no later than age 7. At this early age, orthodontic treatment may not be necessary, but vigilant examination can anticipate the most advantageous time to begin treatment.
  • When Is The Right Time for Braces?
Most people believe that if they didn’t get braces while they were adolescents it’s too late to get them as adults. The truth, though, is that you can get braces no matter how old (or young) you are. In most cases, however, orthodontic treatment usually starts around the age of 12, while a child's mouth and jaws are still growing, but it can be earlier or later.
  • Why should malocclusions be treated?
Orthodontic treatment can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and TMJ pain.
  • What is the average treatment duration?
Treatment duration vary depending on the severity of the case, age of the patient, type of the appliance and patient compliance. Good oral hygiene, keeping regular appointments and following doctor instructions are very important factors that influence treatment duration.
  • How much does orthodontics treatment cost?
Orthodontics treatment cost varies widely depending on the severity of your case and your specific diagnosis and also the orthodontic appliance used for your treatment. Cost of the treatment and financing options will be discussed in detail during your first visit.
  • Are Braces Painful?
Some discomfort or pain is a common experience for braces patients of any age. It takes few days for your mouth to get used to the new appliance. You can take over the counter pain killers or apply ice to the sore area. Most pain subsides away after a few days.
  • Can I still play sport?
Some activities present potential risks to your teeth, especially with braces on. So, to answer the question, yes – you can wear braces and play sports. However, wearing a mouth guard when participating in any physical activity is recommended to protect your teeth.
  • Can adults benefit from orthodontic treatment?
Age is not a consideration when it comes to orthodontic treatment. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. Today, adults account for one in every five orthodontic patients, thanks to the variety of “appliances” used by orthodontists.
